Middle Niobrara NRD Receives Grant for No-Till Drill

The Middle Niobrara Natural Resources District (MNNRD) was awarded a Nebraska Environmental Trust grant in the amount of $28,000 to purchase a no-till drill for use within the District. The drill will be available for rent or for customer drilling of seed. The 10-foot drill has three hopper boxes that will allow for large, small or native grass seed to be used. This drill is ideal for projects such as pasture renovations, soil erosion control, creating grass waterways, filter strips and creating enhancing wildlife habitat. Every acre that is seeded with a no-till drill versus a conventional drill has the potential to save 4-5 tons of soil per acre and it is estimated that over 20,000 acres can be seeded during the useful life of this drill. The MNNRD will use the drill for reseeding projects in the areas burned by the 2012 fires and the Sandhills Chapter of Pheasants Forever will use the drill to enhance pheasant and quail habitat. We would like to thank the Sandhills Pheasants Forever and UNL extension for partnering with us on this grant. Anyone interested in utilizing the drill is encouraged to contact the MNNRD at 402-376-3241
