Water Programs

SURFACE & GROUNDWATER

MANAGEMENT & CONSERVATION

 

In order to maintain the areas high quality surface & groundwater, the NRD implements a variety of programs...

- A District Groundwater Management Plan

- Establishment of a District wide Groundwater Management Area

- Installation of groundwater monitoring wells in key areas of the NRD

- Monitoring of groundwater levels in wells throughout the district

- Groundwater testing for nitrates and pesticides

- Cooperation with UNL Extension: Residual Nitrate Sampling and Alternative Fertilizer Resources Management Project

- Provides cost share for well abandoment

- Provide cost share for irrigation practices

- Surface Water sampling for the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality. The Ambient Stream Monitoring Network includes monthly sampling at four sites year round: Long Pine SRA, Plum Creek near Johnstown, Niobrara River nears Sparks, and Snake River below Merritt Reservoir. During the recreation season (April thru October) these sites are sampled twice monthly in addition to bacteria and toxic algae sampling at Merritt Reservoir and Valentine Mill Pond.
